Collected Letters of Samuel Taylor Coleridge

The Collected Letters of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, edited by Earl Leslie Griggs and published by Clarendon Press in 1956, represents a landmark scholarly effort to consolidate the sprawling correspondence of one of England's most significant Romantic poets. Initiated as part of an ambitious project to provide a definitive record of Coleridge's intellectual and personal life, the volumes meticulously document his complex relationships, philosophical musings, and the creative struggles that defined the era.

The editorial work of Earl Leslie Griggs is widely regarded as a triumph of mid-twentieth-century literary scholarship, characterized by rigorous transcription and expansive annotation. By organizing thousands of letters that had previously been scattered across various private and public archives, Griggs provided readers with an intimate window into the author's mind, effectively contextualizing Coleridge within the broader circle of the Lake Poets and the shifting cultural landscape of the nineteenth century.
