Where it came from
Published in 1966 to coincide with the landmark exhibition at the Orangerie des Tuileries, this album serves as a comprehensive visual record of the Jean Walter and Paul Guillaume collection. The collection, which found its permanent home at the Musée de l'Orangerie, represents one of the most significant assemblages of Impressionist and School of Paris art, documenting the refined aesthetic tastes of art dealer Paul Guillaume and his widow, Domenica Walter.
The album was produced under the auspices of the Ministère des Affaires Culturelles and the Réunion des Musées Nationaux to provide a scholarly overview of the works, which range from Renoir and Cézanne to Soutine and Picasso. The design and layout were intended to mirror the prestige of the collection itself, serving both as a functional catalogue for visitors of the 1966 exhibition and as a lasting archival testament to the private gallery that bridged the gap between early modernism and the avant-garde.
