D adalus: Markus L upertz. Ausstellung im Kunstmuseum Bonn, 2003

This monograph was published in 2003 by Richter Verlag to accompany a major exhibition of the work of Markus Lüpertz at the Kunstmuseum Bonn. Lüpertz, a central figure in the German Neo-Expressionist movement, used this exhibition and the resulting catalog to explore his deep fascination with classical motifs, specifically the mythological figure of Daedalus, which served as a recurring theme in his paintings and sculptures of the era.

The design of the volume reflects the rigorous, austere aesthetic favored by the artist during his time as the director of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. It is curated to bridge the gap between his earlier, gritty expressive works and his more stylized, monumental approach to mythological subject matter. The publication received attention for its high-quality color reproductions, which highlight the heavy impasto and distinct color palettes that have become the hallmarks of Lüpertz’s contribution to late twentieth-century European art.
