Where it came from
This volume was published by the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern to accompany a major exhibition showcasing the work of German Neo-Expressionist painter and sculptor Markus Lüpertz. Lüpertz, a central figure in the post-war German art scene, is known for his rugged, tactile approach to painting and his exploration of German history and mythology through an intentionally provocative lens.
The book serves as a critical survey of the artist's output during a pivotal decade in his career, capturing the raw, figurative intensity that defined his transition from abstract experimentation to the monumental forms he became famous for. Designed with a focus on archival integrity, the publication reflects the serious scholarly intent of the IVAM, aiming to document the evolution of a style that challenged the prevailing minimalism of the era and re-asserted the validity of the human subject in contemporary art.
