Where it came from
Das Ludwig Richter Album, published by Rogner & Bernhard in 1968, serves as a significant retrospective of the 19th-century German artist Ludwig Richter. Richter was a central figure of the Biedermeier period, renowned for his idyllic wood engravings and illustrations that captured the essence of German folk life, landscapes, and domestic morality. This collection was curated to reintroduce his intricate, heartwarming style to a modern audience during the late 1960s, a time when there was a renewed interest in the Romantic and Biedermeier artistic traditions.
The design of this edition reflects the meticulous care Rogner & Bernhard brought to their archival projects, focusing on high-quality reproductions that honor the precision of Richter's original etchings and sketches. By compiling these scattered works into a single volume, the publishers sought to preserve the legacy of an artist who shaped the visual identity of German literature and folklore for generations. The book was well-received by scholars and art enthusiasts alike as an essential reference for understanding the pastoral idealism that defined Richter’s professional career.
