Ludwig Richter's Familienhausbuch

Ludwig Richter’s Familienhausbuch is a quintessential example of 19th-century German Biedermeier illustration, originally conceptualized as an idyllic compendium of domestic life, poetry, and folk wisdom. Richter, a celebrated artist of the Romantic era, designed these vignettes to capture the warmth and moral simplicity of the German family unit, utilizing his signature detailed woodcut style to elevate everyday scenes into cherished cultural icons.

The 1978 Opera-Verlag edition serves as a curated facsimile preservation of these historical wood engravings. By reissuing Richter's work during the late 20th century, the publisher sought to reconnect modern readers with the visual heritage of the 1850s, a period when the original volumes were widely embraced by middle-class households as a central fixture of the parlor library.
