Das "Rolandslied" des Konrad

Das Rolandslied des Konrad, edited by Danielle Buschinger and published by Reineke-Verlag in 1996, serves as a scholarly re-examination of the 12th-century Middle High German epic poem. The original work, attributed to the priest Konrad, is a foundational adaptation of the Old French Chanson de Roland, reinterpreting the heroic narrative of Charlemagne and his paladin Roland through the lens of medieval German chivalric ideals and religious devotion.

Danielle Buschinger, a prominent specialist in medieval German literature, approached this edition to provide a accessible yet academically rigorous text for modern students and researchers. By contextualizing the 12th-century manuscript within its historical sociopolitical framework, Buschinger’s work emphasizes the literary transition from oral traditions to written courtly literature, earning recognition among Germanists for its clarity and contextual depth in interpreting Konrad's stylistic choices.
