Where it came from
Das Rolandslied, composed by the cleric Konrad around 1170, represents one of the earliest major works of Middle High German courtly literature. It serves as a loose adaptation of the Old French Chanson de Roland, reinterpreting the epic struggle of Charlemagne’s paladin within the context of 12th-century German feudal values and crusading ideology. Konrad’s version shifts the tone from a simple battle narrative to a deeply moralistic and religious epic, positioning Roland as a martyr figure who bridges the gap between chivalric duty and divine service.
The 1981 edition published by the Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft is a scholarly recreation designed for academic and enthusiast study. By providing a curated version of this medieval text, the publisher aimed to make Konrad’s linguistically complex work accessible to modern readers while preserving the rigorous textual analysis required for historical research. It is a standard reference for students of medieval German language and literature, valued for its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the original verse structure.
