Das Rolandslied des Pfaffen Konrad

Das Rolandslied, composed by Konrad der Pfaffe in the mid-12th century, stands as a foundational monument of Middle High German literature. Adapted from the Old French Chanson de Roland, Konrad’s version shifts the narrative focus toward a more profound religious and didactic framework, reflecting the crusading zeal and theological concerns of the high medieval era. It remains one of the earliest and most significant examples of the German courtly epic tradition.
