Where it came from
Released in 2004, this songbook serves as the official musical companion to Dave Matthews' first solo studio album, Some Devil. Published by Cherry Lane Music Company, the book was intended to provide fans and musicians with authorized transcriptions of the album's acoustic-driven arrangements, capturing the introspective shift from the ensemble sound of the Dave Matthews Band to the more stripped-back, singer-songwriter aesthetic of his solo work.
The publication follows the conventions of professional sheet music folios, featuring both standard notation and guitar tablature. By including lyrics and chord structures for tracks like the Grammy-winning 'Gravedigger,' it allows for an intimate engagement with Matthews' idiosyncratic guitar playing and rhythmic style. As a piece of music ephemera, it is valued by collectors for its role in documenting the specific creative period that defined the artist's departure from his long-standing band format.
