Dennis Hopper

Published in 1988 to accompany a retrospective exhibition at the Kunsthalle Wien, this volume documents the multifaceted visual career of Dennis Hopper. While best known for his work in film, Hopper was a prolific photographer and painter throughout the 1960s, capturing the intimate lives of cultural icons, the civil rights movement, and the emerging pop art scene. The book serves as a primary archival record of his transition from a Hollywood actor to a serious practitioner of contemporary art.

The publication highlights Hopper's candid, documentary-style photography, which often utilized natural light and unconventional framing to subvert traditional celebrity portraiture. It was curated to emphasize his role as a bridge between the Beat generation and the burgeoning counterculture of the late 1960s. Upon release, the book was received as a significant contribution to the study of 20th-century American artistic intersections, documenting a period of social upheaval through the lens of one of its most complex participants.
