Dennis Hopper - Polaroids

Published by Damiani in 2017, this collection serves as a retrospective of the candid photography captured by actor and director Dennis Hopper throughout his career. Hopper, an avid photographer who often carried a Polaroid camera on set and in his personal life, captured the raw, countercultural energy of the 1960s and 1970s. These images reflect the spontaneity of his creative process, serving as both personal diaries and ethnographic snapshots of his social circle, which included iconic figures from the worlds of art, film, and rock and roll.

The volume was curated to highlight Hopper’s unique eye for composition and his ability to document the ephemeral nature of celebrity and bohemian living. It was received by critics as a poignant piece of visual history, emphasizing that Hopper's lens was as critical to his artistic identity as his acting work. The design of the book prioritizes the tactile nature of the original Polaroids, presenting them in a format that honors their status as artifacts of a bygone era in American photography.
