Where it came from
This scholarly monograph explores the Petrimappe, or Petri-Altar, a significant late-medieval winged altarpiece originally created by the North German master Bertram von Minden around 1380 for the Petrikirche in Hamburg. Martina Sitt, an esteemed art historian, analyzes the work within the context of the Hanseatic League's artistic flourishing, detailing how Bertram's narrative style helped bridge the transition between the International Gothic and regional artistic developments.
The publication was released in 2008 by ConferencePoint Verlag to provide a comprehensive academic assessment of the altar's iconographic program and its conservation history. Sitt examines the intricate layout of the panels, which depict the life of Saint Peter, arguing that the design reflects the sophisticated devotional requirements of the urban merchant class in fourteenth-century Hamburg. The work is widely regarded in art history circles as a definitive resource for understanding the aesthetic evolution of the Hamburg school.
