Die Schlacht bei Jena und Auerstedt, 1806

Published in 1986 by the Deutscher Verlag der Wissenschaften in East Germany, this work by Gerd Fesser examines the twin battles of Jena and Auerstedt, a pivotal moment during the Napoleonic Wars. Fesser, a historian noted for his focus on Prussian and German military history, wrote this text as part of a broader historiographical effort to analyze the collapse of the Prussian state machine against the strategic innovations of Napoleon Bonaparte.

The book serves as a scholarly retrospective on how the decisive defeat in 1806 fundamentally altered European power dynamics and triggered the subsequent Prussian Reform Movement. Designed for an academic audience in the German Democratic Republic, the volume reflects the rigorous historical inquiry common to the era's state-sponsored publishing houses, focusing on the tactical maneuvers and the socio-political implications that ultimately paved the way for the emergence of modern nationalism in the German states.
