Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Zeichnungen und Pastelle

This monograph, published in 1979 by Alpine Fine Arts Collection, serves as a curated retrospective of the works of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a leading figure of the German Expressionist movement. It was produced to bring Kirchner’s emotive and angular draftsmanship to a broader audience, highlighting his critical role in the Die Brücke group and his later, more stylized observations of Swiss mountain life. The volume focuses on the intensity of his lines and his sophisticated use of color in pastels, reflecting the period's growing scholarly interest in formalizing the legacy of early 20th-century avant-garde artists.

The design of this collection emphasizes the raw, visceral quality of Kirchner’s work, prioritizing high-quality reproductions that capture the texture of his sketches. By documenting his transitional style from the frenetic urbanity of Berlin to the meditative landscapes of Davos, the book functions as both a historical record and a tribute to the artist's psychological depth. It was well-received by art historians and collectors for its focused scope, helping to cement the perception of Kirchner as a master of drawing whose compositions offered a stark critique of the burgeoning modern world.
