Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1880-1938

Published in 1980 by the Worthington Gallery, this volume serves as a scholarly survey of the life and work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a central figure in the German Expressionist movement and a founding member of the group Die Brücke. The book emerged during a period of renewed academic interest in early twentieth-century modernism, aiming to contextualize Kirchner’s radical shift from the vibrant, fragmented cityscapes of his Berlin years to the intense, primal landscapes he later painted in the Swiss Alps.

The publication was designed to showcase the emotive power of Kirchner’s woodcuts, sketches, and canvases, documenting the psychological depth that defined his contribution to art history. It highlights his role in bridging traditional German folk art influences with a modern, avant-garde sensibility. As an exhibition catalog or gallery monograph, the work was received as a valuable reference for collectors and art historians seeking to understand the turbulent transition of European modernism through the lens of one of its most complex figures.
