Evgeniĭ Primakov

This biography of Evgeniĭ Primakov was published in 2007 as part of the long-standing 'Zhizn' zamechatel'nykh lyudeĭ' (Lives of Remarkable People) series by the Molodai͡a gvardii͡a publishing house. The series is a cultural institution in Russia, tracing its roots to the 19th century and focusing on the lives of influential historical, political, and cultural figures. By including Primakov, the publisher sought to capture the complexities of a man who served as a diplomat, head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, and Prime Minister during a transformative period in post-Soviet history.

The author, Leonid Mlechin, is a prolific journalist and historian known for his extensive work on the history of the Soviet and Russian security services and foreign policy. In this volume, Mlechin aims to demystify Primakov's career by synthesizing his public political achievements with the opaque nature of his intelligence background. The work was received as a detailed, analytical portrait that provides insight into the geopolitical maneuvering of the late 1990s, reflecting Mlechin’s characteristic approach of blending narrative biography with broader archival context.
