Evgeny Onegin

Alexander Pushkin’s verse novel Evgeny Onegin, completed in 1833, stands as the cornerstone of Russian literature, chronicling the life of a cynical aristocrat through a unique, rhythmic structure now known as the Onegin stanza. The 1937 edition published by Pushkin Press serves as a significant artifact of the centenary of the author's death, a year that saw a massive surge in the canonization of Pushkin as a foundational cultural icon across the Soviet Union and among the diaspora.

This specific edition reflects a dedication to preserving the lyrical integrity of the original Russian text while presenting it in a refined, accessible format for an international audience. While individual illustrators varied within the broader Pushkin Press releases of that era, the 1937 printing was intended to honor the centennial with a focus on high-quality typography and traditional bookcraft, aligning with the publisher's long-standing reputation for championing world-class translation and enduring literary aesthetics.
