Gale Warning

Gale Warning was originally published in 1939 as part of Dornford Yates's celebrated Berry and Chandos literary universe. Yates, a pen name for Cecil William Mercer, was a prominent British novelist during the interwar period, known for his witty, aristocratic characters and penchant for romantic adventure. This particular title serves as a bridge between his lighthearted comedic works and the more suspenseful, thriller-oriented plots that characterized his later career.

The novel reflects the shifting anxieties of late 1930s Europe, blending Yates's signature style of elegant dialogue and high-stakes maneuvering. House of Stratus later reissued this work in 2001, aiming to keep the author's extensive backlist available to modern readers who appreciate the refined, formal prose and distinct social commentary of the era. While Yates was immensely popular during his lifetime, contemporary interest in his work is often driven by dedicated enthusiasts of classic British escapist fiction.
