Where it came from
Published in 1930 by the Istituto Nazionale L.U.C.E., this volume serves as a critical retrospective on the life and work of Giacinto Gigante, the nineteenth-century Neapolitan painter renowned for his role in the School of Posillipo. The publication was produced during a period when the Italian government sought to elevate and codify national artistic heritage, integrating significant regional figures into a broader narrative of Italian cultural identity.
The book functions as a monograph, documenting Gigante's mastery of watercolor and his atmospheric depictions of the landscape surrounding Naples and the Amalfi Coast. Through its selection of illustrations and biographical essays, the text frames Gigante not merely as a local artist, but as a pivotal figure in European Romanticism who bridged the gap between traditional veduta painting and a more modern, evocative approach to light and topography.
