Juan Carlos I

Published in 1988 by Anaya, this biographical work by historian Carlos Seco Serrano was released during a period of significant scholarly interest in the transition to democracy in Spain. As a prominent academic specializing in the 19th and 20th centuries, Seco Serrano aimed to provide a structured historical perspective on the early reign of King Juan Carlos I, focusing on the monarch's pivotal role in navigating the nation's shift toward a constitutional parliamentary system.

The design of the book aligns with the editorial standards of Anaya’s biographical series from the late 1980s, which emphasized accessible yet rigorous political history. Seco Serrano’s approach is characterized by a chronological narrative that avoids hagiography, instead contextualizing the King's decisions within the complex socio-political climate of the Spanish Transition. It was received by critics as a standard, reliable reference text for understanding the consolidation of the monarchy following the death of Francisco Franco.
