Jacques-Louis David

Published in 1993 by the University of Delaware Press, this scholarly monograph was written by Dorothy Johnson as part of a broader academic effort to contextualize the life and political impact of the French Neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David. The text emerged during a period of intense re-evaluation of David’s role in the French Revolution, seeking to look past the artist’s dramatic iconography to understand the complex ideological motivations behind his brushstrokes.

Dorothy Johnson, a respected art historian, approached the subject by examining David’s transition from a royal court painter to a major cultural figure of the revolutionary period. Her analysis focuses on the tension between artistic legacy and personal conviction, providing a rigorous look at his seminal works. The book is widely regarded within art history circles for its depth of research, serving as a standard reference for students and scholars interested in the intersection of Enlightenment philosophy and visual art.
