Where it came from
This scholarly monograph was published in 2002 by Leonardo Arte to coincide with a major retrospective exhibition dedicated to the French Neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David. Authored by Pierre Rosenberg, the former director of the Louvre and a preeminent authority on French painting, the book serves as a comprehensive visual and academic survey of the artist's life and oeuvre, bridging the gap between his early revolutionary fervor and his later career under Napoleon.
The publication is noted for its rigorous art-historical context, offering detailed analyses of David’s compositions and the political shifts that defined his practice. Rosenberg’s approach emphasizes the artist's role in shaping the aesthetic standards of his era, with the volume being well-received by the academic community for its insightful commentary on the tensions between David's classical training and the dramatic historical events he depicted.
