Where it came from
Published in 1985 by Thames and Hudson as part of their Library of Great Painters series, this monograph provides a comprehensive overview of the life and work of the French Neoclassical master Jacques-Louis David. The volume was curated to serve as an accessible yet scholarly resource for art history enthusiasts, situating David’s rigorous aesthetic and political involvement in the French Revolution within the broader context of 18th and 19th-century European art.
The text was authored by Luc de Nanteuil, a respected historian who sought to distill the complexities of David’s transition from the rigid academic style to the dramatic, morally charged compositions that defined his career. The book features a substantial selection of color plates and detailed analysis, reflecting the publisher's long-standing commitment to high-quality art monographs that bridge the gap between academic research and the general reader's library.
