Jennie C. Jones : Ensemble

Jennie C. Jones: Ensemble serves as the definitive catalogue for the artist's mid-career survey, published in conjunction with her major exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The book explores Jones’s unique practice of 'listening' to painting, a cross-disciplinary approach that bridges the gap between mid-century abstraction, Minimalism, and the history of Black avant-garde jazz. By integrating architectural sound-dampening materials like acoustic foam with traditional canvas and oil, Jones challenges the viewer to experience the silence and tension inherent in her compositions.

Edited by curator Lauren Rosati, the volume features scholarly essays and high-fidelity reproductions that document Jones’s evolving dialogue with sonic history. It was designed to mirror the rhythmic, structural precision of her work, placing her aesthetic contributions within the broader canon of American art. The publication received critical praise for its academic depth and for contextualizing how Jones uses negative space and structural layering to evoke the improvisational spirit of musicians such as Alice Coltrane and Muhal Richard Abrams.
