Jo. Christophori Wolfii ... Curæ philologicæ et criticæ in IV. SS. Evangelia et Actus Apostolicos

Johann Christoph Wolf, a prominent German theologian and scholar, compiled this exhaustive philological and critical study on the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles during the early 18th century. Published in 1737 by Christian Herold in Hamburg, the work represents the rigorous intellectual climate of Enlightenment-era biblical scholarship. It was intended as a comprehensive academic resource for clergy and scholars, synthesizing contemporary linguistic analysis with historical theological commentary to address the complexities of the New Testament texts.

The design of this multi-volume set follows the conventions of 18th-century scholarly printing, featuring scholarly apparatus and heavy annotations designed for deep study rather than aesthetic display. Wolf’s work was received as a foundational contribution to the field of philology, cementing his reputation as an authoritative commentator. The publication remains significant today as a window into how historical critics of the era navigated the intersection of classical linguistics and emerging rationalist theology.
