Published in Hamburg in 1737, this work by the theologian and scholar Johann Christoph Wolf serves as a substantial contribution to 18th-century biblical criticism. Wolf, who held the position of pastor at St. Catherine's Church in Hamburg, was deeply embedded in the intellectual life of the city. These philological and critical studies were intended to offer a scholarly examination of the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, reflecting the period's rigorous approach to textual analysis and historical theology.

The publication was overseen by the publisher Christian Herold, a figure known for circulating theological and scholarly texts during this era. The design and layout follow the standard conventions for academic commentaries of the early 1700s, utilizing dense, structured typography to accommodate extensive commentary alongside the primary scriptural references. Upon its release, the work was received by the academic and ecclesiastical communities as a testament to Wolf's linguistic precision and his dedication to the systematic study of the New Testament.
