MAHABHARATA of KRISHNA-DWAIPAYANA VYASA

The Mahabharata, attributed to the sage Vyasa, is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. This specific English translation by Kisari Mohan Ganguli was originally published in the late 19th century, between 1883 and 1896, representing the first complete prose translation of the massive epic into the English language. Ganguli, a scholar from Bengal, undertook this monumental task to preserve the narrative for a global audience, grounding his prose in a literal and formal style that prioritizes fidelity to the original Sanskrit verses over poetic license.

The 2015 edition published by CreateSpace serves as a modern print-on-demand reproduction of Ganguli’s foundational text. While the design is utilitarian, intended to make this sprawling literary classic accessible to contemporary readers and researchers, it reflects a long tradition of scholarship aimed at bridging the gap between classical Indian philosophy and Western literary spheres. The translation remains a standard reference point for historians and literary critics alike, valued for its exhaustive coverage of the epic's complex theological, political, and familial conflicts.
