Where it came from
Published in 1989 by Alinea, this work represents a critical contribution from Marco Dezzi Bardeschi, a prominent Italian architect and professor known for his rigorous, non-conformist approach to historical restoration. The volume serves as a theoretical and practical manifesto within the broader discourse of Italian architectural conservation during the late 20th century, a period marked by intense debates over how to preserve the country's extensive cultural heritage against the pressures of modern urban development.
The text encapsulates Bardeschi's signature 'restauro critico' philosophy, emphasizing that architectural history is not a static object to be frozen in time but a living entity requiring interpretive intervention. Reflecting the academic and intellectual rigor typical of the Alinea publishing house's architectural catalog, the book design and layout were intended to mirror the author's meticulous attention to structural history. It remains a foundational reference for students and professionals interested in the philosophy of conservation and the tension between ancient form and modern function.
