Markus Raetz

Markus Raetz, a central figure in the Swiss conceptual art movement, gained prominence in the late 1960s and 1970s for his interest in perception and the fluidity of form. This monograph, initially associated with his formative years and evolving practice, serves as a comprehensive overview of his optical experiments and sculptural installations. It captures the essence of an artist who sought to challenge the viewer's spatial awareness, often utilizing simple materials like wire or wood to create complex, shifting shadows and perspectives.

The publication functions as a critical documentation of Raetz’s design philosophy, which emphasizes the interplay between reality and illusion. The book reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of contemporary art publishing during the early 1980s, prioritizing clear, analytical layouts that allow his sketches and final works to stand in dialogue. Upon its release, it was received as an essential resource for understanding how Raetz transformed static observation into a dynamic, participatory experience, solidifying his reputation within European art circles and beyond.
