Where it came from
This monograph serves as an essential record of the work of Matthias Koeppel, a prominent figure in the Berlin art scene. Published in 1977 by the Haus am Waldsee, an influential venue for contemporary art in Berlin-Zehlendorf, the volume documents a specific period in the artist's career characterized by his distinct approach to figurative painting and his thematic focus on the urban landscape of West Berlin.
Koeppel’s aesthetic in the late 1970s was deeply intertwined with the peculiar atmosphere of the divided city, often blending architectural realism with a quiet, observant sense of melancholy. The publication reflects the institutional commitment of the Haus am Waldsee to highlight local practitioners, serving as both a catalogue for his exhibitions at the time and a permanent reference for his development during that decade.
