Matthias Weischer

Published in 2005 by RAM Publications, this monograph serves as a definitive survey of the early career of German artist Matthias Weischer. During this period, Weischer was gaining international recognition as a leading figure of the New Leipzig School, a movement characterized by a return to figurative painting and the exploration of claustrophobic, stage-like interior spaces. This volume captures his distinctive approach to construction, where layers of paint are applied to build dense, dollhouse-like architectural environments that blur the line between reality and artifice.

The book provides insight into the formal techniques that defined Weischer’s practice, including his deliberate use of collage and trompe l'oeil elements to disrupt traditional perspective. The publication was received as an essential document for contemporary art collectors interested in the post-reunification evolution of German painting. By showcasing his intricate compositions, the book highlights how Weischer draws upon art historical references—such as the Dutch masters or modernist interior design—to create a sense of psychological unease and nostalgic mystery.
