Milieu 0

Milieu 0 was published in 1996 as a foundational sourcebook for the Traveller role-playing game during its tenure under Imperium Games. This era of the franchise sought to revitalize the classic science fiction setting by exploring the period immediately preceding the rise of the Third Imperium. Authored by Lester W. Smith, a veteran game designer known for his work on several major tabletop systems, the book was designed to provide a cohesive historical framework for referees and players navigating the political and social landscape of the early interstellar expansion.

The design of the volume focuses on establishing the core conflicts and technological limitations defining the 'Milieu 0' timeframe, balancing technical specifications with narrative hooks suitable for open-ended play. It reflects the meticulous, rule-heavy aesthetic characteristic of 1990s tabletop RPG supplements, prioritizing world-building depth to support the sprawling Traveller universe. While it was aimed at a niche audience of established fans, it is regarded by enthusiasts as a significant effort to codify the elusive early history of a setting that had grown incrementally for two decades.
