Provenance

Where it came from

Published in 1959 by B. Grimm, this guide was crafted during a period of renewed academic interest in the late antique and Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna. Franz X. Bartl designed the volume as a concise, visually anchored resource for travelers and art historians seeking to navigate the complex iconographic programs housed within the Basilica of San Vitale and the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe.

The publication reflects the mid-century European tradition of scholarly travel literature, prioritizing detailed architectural documentation and liturgical context. By pairing technical descriptions with high-contrast photography of the period, Bartl aimed to translate the ephemeral quality of Ravenna's light-filled interior spaces into a portable reference, earning a reputation among contemporary regional researchers for its clarity and thematic focus on the historical transition from the Roman to the Byzantine aesthetic.
