Raumdramaturgie

Raumdramaturgie, written by Holger Kleine and published by Birkhäuser (an imprint of de Gruyter) in 2017, serves as a theoretical exploration of the intersection between architecture and dramaturgy. Born from the author’s long-standing academic and professional focus on spatial perception, the work examines how architectural spaces are choreographed to influence human behavior, movement, and narrative experience. It draws heavily on theater studies and architectural phenomenology to articulate how designers can structure space to evoke specific dramatic tensions and atmospheric outcomes.

The book is characterized by its rigorous, research-based approach, aimed primarily at architects, urban planners, and scenographers who seek to move beyond purely functional design. Kleine’s design for the volume reflects a clean, academic aesthetic consistent with the publisher's output, prioritizing clarity in its dense theoretical arguments. Since its release, the book has been well-received within specialized architectural circles, particularly in German-speaking academia, as a foundational text for understanding the 'performative' qualities of built environments.
