Where it came from
Published in 2008 by Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, this monograph serves as a comprehensive survey of the artistic output of Reiner Ruthenbeck, a pivotal figure in German conceptual and minimal art. Ruthenbeck, a student of Joseph Beuys, was known for his spare, often enigmatic sculptures that explored the interplay between material, space, and silence, frequently utilizing industrial materials like iron, ash, and textiles to evoke a sense of quiet tension.
The book was produced to accompany major retrospective exhibitions that celebrated his career, which spanned from the late 1960s into the 21st century. The design reflects the austere and structural qualities of Ruthenbeck’s work, prioritizing archival clarity and documentation of his installations. It was received by the art community as an essential reference for understanding the trajectory of his practice, solidifying his legacy within the lineage of post-war European avant-garde sculpture.
