Reinhold Niebuhr

This volume, titled Reinhold Niebuhr, is part of the 'Makers of Modern Theology' series published by Harper & Row in 1973. It was compiled to provide a structured introduction to the life and thought of the influential American theologian and public intellectual, whose critiques of human nature and political realism shaped much of 20th-century Protestant ethics. The collection sought to distill Niebuhr’s complex dialectical theology into a format accessible to students and clergy, placing his work within the broader historical context of the Cold War era.

The editorial selection for this volume reflects the movement in the 1970s toward preserving the legacy of neo-orthodox theology amidst shifting academic interests. By curating key excerpts and framing them with biographical narrative, the publishers intended to address the growing curiosity regarding Niebuhr’s perspectives on power, justice, and the limitations of human virtue. Upon release, the work was received as a standard reference point for those navigating Niebuhr’s dense bibliography, praised for its clarity in presenting the core tenets of his moral philosophy.
