Where it came from
Published in 1983 by Der Kunstverein, this monograph captures two pivotal decades in the career of the German conceptual artist Reiner Ruthenbeck. Compiled to coincide with mid-career retrospectives, the volume serves as a comprehensive record of his transition from sculpture to installation, documenting his signature use of industrial materials like ash, fabric, and metal to explore themes of silence, tension, and spatial presence.
The book functions as an extension of Ruthenbeck's minimalist aesthetic, utilizing stark typography and precise photography to mirror the contemplative nature of his work. The design emphasizes the quiet, anti-monumental qualities that defined his contributions to the German avant-garde during the late sixties and seventies. It was well-received by the European art community at the time of its release, providing a necessary framework for understanding how Ruthenbeck’s objects challenged the formal boundaries of traditional sculpture.
