Where it came from
Published in 1880 by the S. C. Rogers firm, this trade catalog originated from a period of rapid industrial expansion in the United States, specifically serving the burgeoning lumber and manufacturing sectors. As mechanical saws became central to industrial milling and carpentry, the need for precision maintenance tools grew exponentially, prompting specialized manufacturers like S. C. Rogers to document their technical offerings for professional millwrights and woodworkers.
The catalog reflects the aesthetic of late nineteenth-century technical literature, characterized by detailed woodcut engravings and explicit instructional prose. Rather than aiming for artistic flair, the design focused on clarity and mechanical reliability, illustrating the firm's specialized sharpening and filing machinery. These documents were received by the era's tradespeople as vital technical manuals, establishing the company’s reputation as a leader in industrial saw-maintenance technology.
