Where it came from
Published in 1972, this exhibition catalog was produced for the 'Vienna Fantastic Realism' (Wien Gensō Kaigaten) exhibition held at the Odakyū Department Store in Tokyo. The event was part of a broader mid-century Japanese fascination with European surrealism and the metaphysical tradition, aiming to introduce the rigorous, dream-like techniques of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism to a domestic audience.
The publication was coordinated by the Asahi Shimbun Tokyo Headquarters and reflects the high production standards of 1970s Japanese exhibition catalogs. It serves as a curated retrospective of the movement, featuring works by artists such as Ernst Fuchs, Rudolf Hausner, and Arik Brauer, whose meticulous, Old Master-style oil painting techniques defined the genre. The catalog was received as an important educational resource, helping bridge the gap between European avant-garde traditions and the growing Japanese interest in global contemporary art history.
