Shirley and Jamila Save Their Summer

Published in 2019 by Penguin Young Readers Group, Shirley and Jamila Save Their Summer serves as a middle-grade graphic novel debut for Canadian author and illustrator Gillian Goerz. The narrative reimagines the classic tropes of the Sherlock Holmes detective partnership, shifting the dynamic to a friendship between two young girls who bond over the necessity of navigating their neighborhood and avoiding the monotony of summer break. The work was conceived as a way to provide younger readers with an accessible mystery that emphasizes emotional intelligence and the complexities of female friendship.

Goerz utilized a vibrant, character-focused illustrative style intended to capture the energy of urban summer life. Upon its release, the book received positive critical attention for its inclusive characterizations and its ability to modernize the traditional detective story format for a contemporary audience. The graphic novel was subsequently praised for its clear visual storytelling, leading to the development of a broader series that continues the adventures of these two protagonists.
