Where it came from
Published in 1988 by Die Galerie, this monograph documents the sculptural practice of Austrian artist Manfred Wakolbinger during a pivotal stage of his career. Wakolbinger transitioned from experimental photography and film into the creation of metallic, organic-looking forms, and this volume serves as a catalog of that spatial exploration, capturing how his work moved away from the two-dimensional plane into tangible, three-dimensional space.
The publication reflects the avant-garde spirit of the late 1980s European art scene, where traditional boundaries between media were frequently challenged. The design emphasizes the tactile nature of Wakolbinger’s sculptures, utilizing high-contrast photography to highlight the interplay of light and shadow on his copper and lead surfaces. It was received as an essential reference for understanding his commitment to material transformation and his interest in the relationship between industrial textures and biological evolution.
