Slappy's tales of horror

Slappy's Tales of Horror was published by Scholastic in 2015 as part of the expanded Goosebumps franchise. Designed to capitalize on the enduring popularity of R.L. Stine’s sentient ventriloquist dummy, the book serves as a collection of short stories centered on the macabre adventures of Slappy. It emerged during a period of renewed interest in the series, coinciding with the lead-up to the 2015 live-action feature film, and features illustrations by Jamie Tolagson, who was tasked with capturing the iconic, unsettling aesthetic of the character for a younger generation of horror readers.

The design of the book reflects the branding strategy of modern Goosebumps spin-offs, utilizing a compact, accessible format intended for middle-grade readers who grew up with the 90s phenomena. Tolagson’s illustrations were intended to bridge the gap between the original iconic cover art by Tim Jacobus and a more modern, digital-forward graphic style. Upon its release, it was received as a standard entry in the expanded universe, noted by fans for maintaining the campy, spooky tone that defined Stine's original works.
