Sound Works

Sound Works was published in 2018 as part of Bloomsbury’s Sound Studies series, a collection dedicated to the interdisciplinary exploration of acoustic phenomena. Written by Holger Schulze, a prominent cultural theorist and professor of musicology at the University of Copenhagen, the text serves as a conceptual investigation into how sound is curated, designed, and experienced in contemporary environments. It arose from Schulze's long-standing research into the anthropology of sound and the sensory impacts of technological landscapes.

The book is structured as a series of ethnographic observations and philosophical reflections that move beyond traditional musicology. Schulze aimed to map the intersection between sound design, architecture, and personal identity, focusing on how individuals interpret auditory stimuli in public and private spaces. Upon its release, the work was noted by scholars for its dense, rigorous approach to sensory theory, establishing itself as a foundational text for students and practitioners of sound art and acoustic design.
