Originally published in 1847, this account was written by the French Lazarist missionary Évariste Régis Huc, who, alongside Father Joseph Gabet, embarked on a daring expedition from China through Mongolia into Tibet. Tasked by the Apostolic Vicar of Mongolia to explore the prefecture of Si-ning and investigate the state of the mission in Tibet, Huc documented his observations of Tibetan religious customs, landscapes, and daily life. The work gained immense popularity in Europe for its vivid, often humorous narrative style, which deviated from the dry academic tone typical of travelogues of that era.

The text is regarded as one of the most important early Western accounts of the region, though it has faced historical scrutiny regarding the veracity of certain descriptions. Huc’s design for the narrative was to capture the curiosity of the French public while emphasizing the challenges of his ecclesiastical journey.
