Where it came from
Sorcery and Cecelia, or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot was born from a creative letter-writing game played between authors Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer. Throughout the 1980s, the two friends composed correspondence as their fictional Regency-era cousins, Kate and Cecelia, inadvertently weaving a complex mystery involving magical societies and high-society intrigue. The resulting manuscript was published in 1988, blending the witty social manners of Jane Austen with an imaginative secondary-world fantasy setting.
The book is widely regarded as a foundational text in the epistolary fantasy genre, praised for its sharp dialogue and seamless integration of historical tone with fantastical elements. While it initially found a niche audience, its subsequent re-releases solidified its status as a cult classic. The narrative style intentionally mimics the voice of 19th-century letter writing, focusing on domestic spheres that contrast humorously with the dangerous magical conspiracies unfolding in the background.
