The poems of Oliver Goldsmith

This edition of The Poems of Oliver Goldsmith was published in 1859 by George Routledge and Sons, a prominent London firm known for making literature accessible to a burgeoning Victorian middle-class readership. The publication arrived during a period of intense cultural interest in 18th-century English literature, positioning Goldsmith’s lyrical works—most notably The Deserted Village and The Traveller—as essential components of the home library.

The physical design of this volume reflects the aesthetic standards of mid-19th-century trade bindings, which often prioritized decorative durability to withstand frequent reading. Illustrated editions like this were curated to provide a visual accompaniment to the pastoral themes of Goldsmith's poetry, balancing the simplicity of his observational verse with the elaborate, refined printing techniques that characterized the publishing output of the Routledge house during this era.
