The poetical works of Oliver Goldsmith

This 1804 edition of The Poetical Works of Oliver Goldsmith was produced by the Albion Press under the direction of James Cundee for the publisher Thomas Hurst. It emerged during a period of intense Regency-era interest in the collected works of late 18th-century English poets, serving as a handsome, accessible volume for a growing middle-class readership that valued both literary refinement and quality printing.

The design reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of early 19th-century book production, characterized by elegant typography and, in many copies of this era, the inclusion of delicate engravings that complemented Goldsmith’s lyrical, often melancholic style. While Goldsmith had passed away decades earlier, the continued publication of these works cemented his reputation as a master of the pastoral and sentimental traditions, ensuring his verses remained a staple in the libraries of the well-read.
