Pinnock's improved edition of Dr. Goldsmith's history of Greece, abridged for the use of schools

Originally written by Oliver Goldsmith in the 18th century as a foundational educational text, this specific edition was part of a widespread 19th-century effort to standardize historical instruction for young students. William Pinnock gained significant fame for his 'improved' series, which supplemented Goldsmith's original narrative with modern geographical notes, examination questions, and woodcut illustrations designed to make dense historical facts more accessible to the burgeoning school-age population in the United States and Britain.

This 1838 edition, published by F. W. Greenough in Philadelphia, represents the height of the mid-century schoolbook industry. By modifying Goldsmith's original prose to better suit classroom recitation, editors like Pinnock shaped the historical worldview of a generation. These editions were intentionally produced in durable, functional formats, intended to be handled by students and passed through school libraries, reflecting the era's focus on practical, rote-learning methodologies.
