Where it came from
Published in 2002 by GLF editori Laterza, this biographical study by Germana Ernst serves as a definitive academic exploration of Tommaso Campanella, the 17th-century Italian philosopher and Dominican friar. Ernst, a distinguished scholar in the field of Renaissance thought, crafted this work to synthesize the complex political and theological landscape of Campanella’s life, specifically focusing on his imprisonment and his influential writings such as 'The City of the Sun'.
The book is a part of Laterza's rigorous historical series, designed to bring nuanced scholarship to a broader intellectual audience. Ernst’s approach is praised for its meticulous archival research and its effort to reconcile Campanella's reputation as a visionary utopian thinker with the volatile religious climate of the Counter-Reformation. It remains a standard reference for historians seeking to understand the intersection of philosophy and heresy in early modern Italy.
